April 12, 2008: ENGLEWOOD, NEW JERSEY USA -- Today, the 52nd anniversary of the development of the injectable polio vaccine, the International Post-Polio Task Force (IPTF) announced National Immunization for Polio Prevention in Infants and Toddlers - or "NIPP IT" -- WEEK, April 19-26.
“NIPP IT” WEEK, supported by Rotary International and Every Child by Two (ECBT.org), cofounded by former First Ladies Rosalynn Carter and Betty Bumpers to promote immunization of all children by age two, is intended to prompt parents, healthcare professionals and state health officials to ensure that all American children receive four doses of the injectable, inactivated polio vaccine.
Alarming Drops in Polio Vaccination in Border States and Ports of Entry.
Between 2005 to 2007, the Centers for Disease Control reported drops in polio vaccination in twenty states and in ten large US cities, along with importation of poliovirus across borders into the US that caused polio infections in Minnesota and Arizona.
"The return of polio to the US and drops in polio vaccination are very disturbing," said Dr. Richard L. Bruno, Chairperson of the International Post-Polio Task Force. CDC estimates that more than one million US toddlers are unvaccinated. "While there was a small nationwide increase in polio vaccination of about 1%, twenty states had an average reduction of more than 2%, while in ten cities polio vaccination dropped by an average of nearly 3%," added Bruno, who is also director of The Post-Polio Institute and International Centre for Post-Polio Education and Research at New Jersey's Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.
Even more disturbing, states with the largest drops in polio vaccination are on the borders with Mexico and Canada. Arizona, Texas and New Mexico reported an average drop of one and one-half percent. Seventy percent of the states that border Canada reported average drops in polio vaccination of about 3%. Montana had a 6% decrease and Maine dropped 7%.
“Even Minnesota had a decrease, which is frightening,” said Dr. Bruno. Five Minnesota children caught polio in 2005 after coming in contact with someone importing poliovirus from outside the US.
Dr. Bruno is also concerned about cities that are major points of entry into the US -- New York, Philadelphia, Houston and Seattle -- where a nearly 4% average drop in polio vaccination was reported.
City Children Living in Poverty Have Lowest Polio Vaccination Rates.
Toddlers living in poverty have the lowest polio vaccination rates -- below 87% in Boston, Indianapolis, Memphis and Phoenix, and below 85% in Detroit, Houston and Seattle -- rates lower than in Western Pacific countries that include Cambodia, Mongolia and Vietnam.
"The children who had polio in Minnesota are canaries in the mine shaft," said Dr. Bruno.
“Young parents don't vaccinate because they don't remember the terror that was polio or realize that the vaccine did not ‘cure’ polio.” Polio has never come under control in Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Nigeria. And, the poliovirus has been reintroduced to ten African and Asian nations that were polio free.
"With the ease of air travel,” asked Dr. Bruno, “What will happen when a polio-infected individual lands in one of America's potential polio pockets, like New York City, and passes poliovirus to the estimated 24,000 infants and toddlers in that city who are not immunized?"
Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter agreed, saying, "Our country has come so far to protect against polio through universal vaccination. We cannot afford to relax our efforts because polio is still a real problem in parts of the world and can easily be transported back to the US We cannot risk a single child to this terrible disease."
"We need “NIPP IT WEEK” to raise awareness of the need for polio vaccination and hopefully ‘nip’ America’s next polio epidemic in the bud,” said Dr. Bruno.
Said Betty Bumpers, Former Arkansas First Lady, "I have seen the ravages of polio here in the U.S., prior to the development of the vaccine, and its current victims in Africa. It is imperative that we keep our polio vaccination rates high to make certain that not one person in the US suffers polio's consequences."
Dr. Bruno agreed, saying, "The polio vaccine has been a victim of its own success. We must do more to vaccinate America's children against this deadly and disabling disease. America's next polio epidemic could be just a car or plane ride away."

Empathy Overload
It's been over a week now since I saw that video of the U.S. marine taking a puppy and throwing it over a cliff. Thinking that time would lessen the anger a bit and even out my outrage at the whole stinkin mess. I was wrong.
If anything I'm even more pissed off. Those images hit me hard. Damn hard, and not only do I want payback, I want immediate payback. I'm not so naive as to believe that's gonna happen because I know the wheels of justice turn painfully slow.
It still doesn't stop me from the following absolute rant.
I still have trouble with the fact that anyone could do something that callous and heartless. It's not that Mortari was "mean," it's that he's a monster who shrugs off an unneccesary murder like it was nothing... as if to say "Oh, well."
The fact that his friends share in the same sarcastic attitude (and don't tell me they didn't - it's all there in the video) makes them accessories.
I hear his family in Monroe received so many threatening phone calls they've had to change their number. While I don't condone such threats, I completely understand this incident sparked an extreme level of outrage from anyone with even an ounce of compassion for animals. Just the same, its never ok to target those who aren't directly involved. So if you've done that, or are still doing that please stop. This won't help the cause for animals and you certainly won't be taken seriously.
Mortari's sister recently voiced her opinion on a local call-in radio show, basically condoning her brother's behavior. My message to her is: If you're gonna be an asshole, then I'll be more than happy to treat you like one. There is no such thing as a defenseless pup being "just a dog." Your brother murders puppies for kicks; so I would treat him no better than the killer he is.
Interesting how many of you who saw the video and even some of those who didn't see it are still convinced it's been altered. It sure didn't look fake to me, considering how a puppy reacts to being held like that. But if the video is such a fake, then where the hell is this guy claiming his innocence? If he has nothing to hide, he should have been all over the place trying to clear it up if this was such a misunderstanding. The reason for that is probably because he's been caught on tape, he's in deep shit right now and he knows it.
To those of the opinion that his being over in Iraq in a combat situation somehow drove him to a mental state separate from reality. That's a load of crap as well. This guy didn't look all that shell-shocked to me. I'm sure he was messed up in the head to begin with. The lure of having a gun and getting to use it was probably why he signed on in the first place. Maybe when he didn't find the action he was looking for, that trigger finger was just itching for a gun. Maybe for whatever reason, he chose not to shoot anything. For him the "next best thing" was exactly what he did to that puppy, sick bastard he must have always been.
I'm calling for the U.S. Marines to impose a dishonorable discharge, revocation of any and all military benefits, criminal charges, court-martial and any other discipline that would apply in this case, to David Mortari.

When Antoine Draper sent his two year old pit bull, MiMi, to live with his brother for a while, he said it was like parting with one of his kids. "From a puppy I fed her with a bottle. From the time she was born," Draper said.
Just days before Christmas, Antoine Draper received a phone call that made him sick to his stomach - someone had set Mimi on fire while she was giving birth to puppies. The dog was still burning when Draper got there - and he knows who did it.
Mr. Draper filed a police report and brought witnesses with him, but to this day, Mimi's killer - his brother's ex-girlfriend - is still free. Mimi's remains are still in the yard.
We are asking you to please arrest and charge the person responsible for such a cruel and heartless act. Someone with the ability to commit such a heinous act without thought or provocation is also a threat to humans.

Oh F-ing Please!
Suspended Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison for his guilty plea on charges related to dogfighting, plans to enter a drug treatment program that could reduce his time behind bars.
"Mr. Vick has been transferred from the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Virginia to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons minimum security facility in Leavenworth, Kan.," his attorneys, Billy Martin and Lawrence H. Woodward Jr., said in a jointly issued statement Monday. "Mr. Vick hopes to participate in programs offered at that facility, including the Bureau of Prisons drug treatment program."
Vick, who failed a drug test while awaiting sentencing in the dogfighting case, is eligible for a federal drug treatment program known as the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). Inmates are involved in intensive treatment that lasts six to 12 months, with a minimum of 500 hours of treatment.
Upon completion of the program, the inmate's eligibility for early release based on previous criminal
convictions is determined. Vick did not have any previous convictions before his dogfighting case.
The RDAP accepts inmates, and they are eligible for early release even if they have not been convicted of drug-related offenses provided they meet a series of qualifications. Vick meets those requirements.
Animal rights activists were not happy that Vick may not serve his entire 23-month sentence.
"The drugs were completely irrelevant to the actual crime here," said John Goodwin, the Humane Society's deputy manager of animal fighting issues. "If this was drug rehab or a narcotics-related event, that's another thing, but the issue of killing these dogs is an entirely different matter."
According to Criminal Justice magazine, which is published by the American Bar Association, the program is known as the 500-hour Comprehensive RDAP. Some qualified offenders will be eligible for an early release benefit of up to 12 months. The Bureau of Prisons average is 8.5 months, usually coupled with an extended halfway house stay or home confinement.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed Monday that Vick had been transferred to Leavenworth, but would not confirm that Vick would be entered into the drug program. Vick was moved from Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Va., where he has been since reporting to prison before being sentenced Dec. 10.
For now, Vick's prison number is 33765-183, and his projected release date is July 2009, which would be the full 23-month sentence.
An 8.5-month reduction on top of a possible reduction of 15 percent for good conduct means Vick could be released before the end of 2008. He faces an April 2 trial date in Virginia on state dogfighting charges.
An early prison release would allow Vick to apply sooner for reinstatement to the NFL. He is suspended indefinitely but is still on the Falcons' roster. A suspension by the NFL for the conviction and failed drug test is possible.
The Falcons refused to comment. They have attempted to distance themselves from the fallen quarterback, but because of severe salary cap ramifications have kept him on the roster. The team has sought to recover almost $20 million in salary and bonuses from Vick. The grievance is under review by Judge David Doty in Minneapolis.
From the outset, Martin has stated his goal was to get Vick back to his NFL career as soon as possible. Successful completion of the treatment program would give him a better chance of returning to the NFL in 2009 after missing two seasons.
"Mr. Vick looks forward to being reunited with his family upon completion of his sentence," Martin and Woodward said in the statement. "He is hopeful that following his release, he will have the opportunity to resume his career as a professional football player."
"Mr. Vick has been transferred from the Northern Neck Regional Jail in Virginia to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons minimum security facility in Leavenworth, Kan.," his attorneys, Billy Martin and Lawrence H. Woodward Jr., said in a jointly issued statement Monday. "Mr. Vick hopes to participate in programs offered at that facility, including the Bureau of Prisons drug treatment program."
Vick, who failed a drug test while awaiting sentencing in the dogfighting case, is eligible for a federal drug treatment program known as the Residential Drug Abuse Program (RDAP). Inmates are involved in intensive treatment that lasts six to 12 months, with a minimum of 500 hours of treatment.
Upon completion of the program, the inmate's eligibility for early release based on previous criminal
convictions is determined. Vick did not have any previous convictions before his dogfighting case.
The RDAP accepts inmates, and they are eligible for early release even if they have not been convicted of drug-related offenses provided they meet a series of qualifications. Vick meets those requirements.
Animal rights activists were not happy that Vick may not serve his entire 23-month sentence.
"The drugs were completely irrelevant to the actual crime here," said John Goodwin, the Humane Society's deputy manager of animal fighting issues. "If this was drug rehab or a narcotics-related event, that's another thing, but the issue of killing these dogs is an entirely different matter."
According to Criminal Justice magazine, which is published by the American Bar Association, the program is known as the 500-hour Comprehensive RDAP. Some qualified offenders will be eligible for an early release benefit of up to 12 months. The Bureau of Prisons average is 8.5 months, usually coupled with an extended halfway house stay or home confinement.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed Monday that Vick had been transferred to Leavenworth, but would not confirm that Vick would be entered into the drug program. Vick was moved from Northern Neck Regional Jail in Warsaw, Va., where he has been since reporting to prison before being sentenced Dec. 10.
For now, Vick's prison number is 33765-183, and his projected release date is July 2009, which would be the full 23-month sentence.
An 8.5-month reduction on top of a possible reduction of 15 percent for good conduct means Vick could be released before the end of 2008. He faces an April 2 trial date in Virginia on state dogfighting charges.
An early prison release would allow Vick to apply sooner for reinstatement to the NFL. He is suspended indefinitely but is still on the Falcons' roster. A suspension by the NFL for the conviction and failed drug test is possible.
The Falcons refused to comment. They have attempted to distance themselves from the fallen quarterback, but because of severe salary cap ramifications have kept him on the roster. The team has sought to recover almost $20 million in salary and bonuses from Vick. The grievance is under review by Judge David Doty in Minneapolis.

Worldwide shit
It happens more than I'd like for it to.
Last night I tried to watch a movie and up to a certain point it was relatively decent. Then it took a nose dive right smack in the middle... and became more lame by the second.
But that's not gonna be what I'm writing about today.
The fact is that before I even started this blog last night, I clicked on some other sites. Now usually they're what I think are important. And that part still remains true. They are important. But lately what happens is that I read this stuff, and it overrides everything else thats happening at the moment. Everything is blocked out by this dark cloud that I find every single time.
People abuse animals, that's been going on for hundreds of years. Its a fact, it's the actions of sick people that motivate me to try putting a stop to it. There's just so damn much of it, not just here in the city and state where I live. Not just in the U.S. It's much worse in China, Spain, Puerto Rico.. anywhere you can think of.
There are entire societies who think nothing of torturing a stray animal, or entire breed, or exploiting certain dogs for financial gain. The lengths they go, the intricate ways they find to inflict pain and death.
Sometimes it just gets so overwhelming. Frustration can build and this feeling of never really being able to help. Yeah, I know its easy to feel that way, but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop. I go through this like maybe once or twice a week. Just thought I'd let you know a little of what its like.

Happy Halloween
A little precaution never hurt anyone... As with any holiday or event, we need to think of our pets. That means no chocolate for your fur babies. And take extra precaution with your cats and kittens. Please consider keeping them indoors around Halloween. There's always the risk of the wrong kind of people looking to pull some kind of cruel pranks. So to cut down on such cases, it's probably best to keep your pets safe inside.
Boy do I have my work cut out for me, lol. I've been planning a Halloween video and time's running out. I foresee a lot of editing, cutting and pasting, and overlays for tomorrow night. We've had a lot of fun with it so far, and I'm really excited about getting it posted.
The weather's turned off chilly the past week... was starting to think Fall had been cancelled. But it's here now, finally here.
Been catching quite a few scary movies the past couple of days. Jeepers Creepers 2, and some ones on cable they showcased in last year's Horrorfest. They claim those movies are too explicit for a general crowd so they offer a ticket package just for them. But I guess by the time they reach cable they must have really been edited down, cause I don't think there's anything shocking about them. Either I've been desensitized or they really are lame.
That doesn't dim any expectations I have for actual Halloween night. A Ghosthunters marathon, followed by a live investigation at the Waverly Sanatorium. It's supposed to be interactive on the web again so that should be interesting.
Back to the puppies tomorrow, after a my weekend. I've been told it's gonna be a busy season from now till Christmas. So I'm psyching myself up for that.

Abominable
Thank God my weekend is here now. I have a friend on MySpace who used to work where I do. I left a comment on his profile... "Please come back to the shoppe! At least long enough to slap some sense into she who must not be named." For the love of all that is decent, she really has to go. I just can't believe the level of laziness I deal with when I come in some mornings after her shift. She's left the most obvious things undone. It's been like that for as long as I've been there. She's moody, she's fake, she's a slob, and she knows damn good and well I don't like her.
I mean, I take pride in what I do. I try to make things look good. I take the time to socialize these little guys. I try to make their time here fun. And I give a shit. At least I give a shit. She'll do the absolute minimun she can get away with. I can't stand that. I guess you could say it's my pet peeve. Pun intended.
Maybe I'm just in a funk... I've been wanting to do the pictures for their site for months. I wanted to be their regular photographer for the new puppies and kittens. I've done it before, and I've done it well. But you can't rush these things. You have to take a ton of shots before you can get one good one. And you have to go through them all and choose the ones you want to use. But no, they just want to hurry up and slap any old picture up there no matter how crappy it is. Dammit! It could be a much better draw if they did it like I think it should be done. I mean, I look at those pics and then at mine and you can really tell a difference. I get the cutest ones, the ones where you can at least see their face, with some unique quality, some facial expression, some look in the eyes. The photos are so much better when there's some personality coming through. But no, they want to rush things, and that's one thing that can't be rushed. So I'm really kind of pissed off about that.

New Animal Rescue in Camden County

CAMDEN COUNTY -- There's a new animal rescue in town: a group that is unfettered by the kind of bureaucracy and politics that seem to bog down the other animal rescue behemoths. And the good news is, New Jersey Aid for Animals (NJAFA) is making a difference.
Kathy McGuire, Founder and President of South Jersey-based NJAFA believes that directly working the problem is the only solution to solving it. This diminutive, dedicated dynamo is so serious about rescuing helpless creatures from the horrific conditions imposed by their abusers, she'll go right into places others fear to tread and is an intrepid traveler checking out tips from all over New Jersey about cruelty and then reporting it to the authorities when others "may not want to get involved".
Topping the list of priorities on her daily to-do list, when she is not investigating the cruelty tips that come in, is educating people about spaying and neutering their pets –
"When funding is available, we are the ONLY non profit that travels regularly into Camden and personally takes animals from people's homes to get them altered and returns them the same night because these individuals don't have the money or transportation to get it done themselves. No one else does what we do. NJAFA is adamant about the importance of spaying/neutering because of the severe overpopulation of cats and dogs. McGuire explains "Checking out cruelty tips and then reporting it to the authorities, is as much of a priority for me as helping to prevent it – and a major way of doing that is educating people on the importance of spaying/neutering and getting it done myself if that's what it takes She is well known in Camden and gets calls daily from individuals to have their animals spayed or neutered.
"We aid animals in all counties of New Jersey but focus our dedication and compassion for Camden City, New Jersey's animals," McGuire explains. "Because we are headquartered in Camden County, a Camden County animal may receive a major portion of our funding for spaying and neutering and, when we have the funds, for needed medical procedures."
Armed with a tough, no-nonsense approach that offers zero tolerance for uncivilized behavior of humans toward the helpless, McGuire doesn't just field calls from concerned citizens who report abuse cases – she acts on them. A seasoned animal rescuer for almost two decades, McGuire is a certified NJ State Cruelty Investigator and Animal Control Officer, she has done due diligence to make sure of her legal standing when putting in her time and efforts on behalf of abused animals and against the abusers.
In fact, when she was newly certified three years ago, the NJSPCA asked her to coordinate the rescue and placement of two major animal hoarding cases because of her unique approach to saving animals. McGuire pulled out more than 100 animals from two hoarders and saved 98 percent of them from being forced to shelters and being euthanized, which is the usual protocol.
In her tireless mission to stop the suffering – one animal at a time – McGuire is all too aware that animal abusers will many times escalate to abusing and even murdering other humans. CAMDEN COUNTY -- There's a new animal rescue in town: a group that is unfettered by the kind of bureaucracy and politics that seem to bog down the other animal rescue behemoths. And the good news is, New Jersey Aid for Animals (NJAFA) is making a difference.
Kathy McGuire, Founder and President of South Jersey-based NJAFA believes that directly working the problem is the only solution to solving it. This diminutive, dedicated dynamo is so serious about rescuing helpless creatures from the horrific conditions imposed by their abusers, she'll go right into places others fear to tread and is an intrepid traveler checking out tips from all over New Jersey about cruelty and then reporting it to the authorities when others "may not want to get involved".
Topping the list of priorities on her daily to-do list, when she is not investigating the cruelty tips that come in, is educating people about spaying and neutering their pets –
"When funding is available, we are the ONLY non profit that travels regularly into Camden and personally takes animals from people's homes to get them altered and returns them the same night because these individuals don't have the money or transportation to get it done themselves. No one else does what we do. NJAFA is adamant about the importance of spaying/neutering because of the severe overpopulation of cats and dogs. McGuire explains "Checking out cruelty tips and then reporting it to the authorities, is as much of a priority for me as helping to prevent it – and a major way of doing that is educating people on the importance of spaying/neutering and getting it done myself if that's what it takes She is well known in Camden and gets calls daily from individuals to have their animals spayed or neutered.
"We aid animals in all counties of New Jersey but focus our dedication and compassion for Camden City, New Jersey's animals," McGuire explains. "Because we are headquartered in Camden County, a Camden County animal may receive a major portion of our funding for spaying and neutering and, when we have the funds, for needed medical procedures."
Armed with a tough, no-nonsense approach that offers zero tolerance for uncivilized behavior of humans toward the helpless, McGuire doesn't just field calls from concerned citizens who report abuse cases – she acts on them. A seasoned animal rescuer for almost two decades, McGuire is a certified NJ State Cruelty Investigator and Animal Control Officer, she has done due diligence to make sure of her legal standing when putting in her time and efforts on behalf of abused animals and against the abusers.
In fact, when she was newly certified three years ago, the NJSPCA asked her to coordinate the rescue and placement of two major animal hoarding cases because of her unique approach to saving animals. McGuire pulled out more than 100 animals from two hoarders and saved 98 percent of them from being forced to shelters and being euthanized, which is the usual protocol.

Wanted in Alabama
Looks like another monster on the loose for torturing dogs... Folks, I'm rapidly losing my patience with these "people." This guy is just another in a long list of bad guys I'm wanting to go after. Letters, phone calls, correspondence to the right agencies are needed. We all need to be the eyes, ears, and ultimately the voice of these animals who never had a say in how they're treated.
The abuse and burning of a 2-year-old pit bull has the phones ringing off the hook and donations pouring in at the Montgomery Humane Society.
The dog was beaten with a shovel, soaked with lighter fluid and set on fire while chained to a post Sept. 7.
"We are receiving calls from as far away as Brazil from people asking what possessed a person to torture such an innocent and loving animal as Louis and what can they do to help him," said Steven Tears, director of the Montgomery Humane Society.
The Humane Society named the dog "Louis Vuitton." A dog named Gucci was abused and burned in Mobile in 1994. That case led to Alabama's so-called Gucci Law, which was enacted in 2000 and makes it a felony to torture or kill a dog or cat.
In Louis' case, police have issued a felony arrest warrant for 20-year-old Juan Daniels, the son of Louis' owner. According to Scott Hill, the Humane Society's abuse investigator, Daniels wasn't allowed to borrow his mother's car, so in retribution, he tortured her dog.
Daniels faces a charge of first-degree animal cruelty. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. As of late Thursday afternoon, Daniels had not been taken into custody.
Louis is suffering from severe burns on 60 percent of his body and has multiple blunt-force trauma wounds, said Scott Hill, the Humane Society's abuse investigator.
"We are more concerned with Louis' burns because of the risk of infections from the open wounds and the severe pain he's in from having his foot pads and his claws burned," he said.
Glenda Easterling, who has been volunteering at the shelter for 14 years, said she was horrified to learn what had happened to Louis.
"Do you want to know my true feelings about what should happen to this man or just what you can print in the newspaper?" Easterling said Thursday at the shelter.
"How twisted can a man's mind be to attempt to burn any living creature alive?" she asked.
Tears said the shelter has received more than 50 calls a day about Louis and people have been stopping by the shelter to make donations.
Louis is being treated at an undisclosed location. He likely will need several major operations and could be hospitalized for a year.
"Any donations for Louis will be of great help to us so we can pay for his medical treatment," Tears said.
In 2006, the Montgomery Humane Society investigated about 1,400 cases of animal neglect and cruelty, leading to 300 arrests, Hill said.
Louis will be in pain for months, Hill said, but he's in good spirits, judging from how fast his tail wags every time someone comes to visit him.
"Louis' abuse is one of the most cruel and severe cases that we have seen in Montgomery in a number of years," he said.
"But Louis must be feeling better today because he has gotten into the trash can twice already," he said.

I've been looking forward to getting this. It's a step-by-step guide to gaining a better voice as a voter in the political process. A voice for those who have none. A book like this is what I've been looking for. And if you even remotely consider yourself an animal lover, you'll find it an excellent resource to effect change. Its for anyone willing to be there for the long haul, ready to devote the time and effort it's gonna take to show lawmakers you're not gonna disappear eventually. To be honest, I'm really very excited about putting these strategies into practice. I've only browsed through a little of the book so far but I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to help pets and animals.

Vista, anyone?
Got a new computer. Dude! We got a Dell! (I've always wanted to say that.) Coolness personified, this Dell. It's got Vista home premium, and now I can use the Adobe Premier elements I've had laying around all this time but couldn't use 'cause it wasn't compatable with the old 'puter. That and the webcam that I also couldn't use (for the same reason.) Well, I'm off to play with the Adobe, WMM, and just explore and have some fun... Hope everyone's having a great weekend!

It's devastating. I can't even imagine what the survivors went through... or what the families and close friends are still going through. All I know is that 32 of the most hopeful, talented, caring, giving souls are now gone. A bright future for each of them, gone. A satisfying career, gone. Artistic endeavors, all of it gone.
And that breaks my heart. To be honest with you, I haven't watched this much news coverage since Katrina demolished much of New Orleans; before that, 9-11. Only I'm not watching from some morbid interest, I'm watching to see what's being done to prevent any more of this craziness from happening.
I admit, I've watched the reports voraciously... because I can then find out how the system is flawed. What procedures are in place that no longer work (if they ever worked to begin with.)
The fact that this monster who terrorized the Virginia Tech campus was able to fill out paperwork, pass a background check, make his purchase and walk out of a Roanoke, VA gun shop within an hour is outrageous. What a shocking learning experience this has been. I was mistakenly under the impression that there was a mandatory 14-day waiting period for any gun purchase, regardless of whether an applicant passes a background check. To find out the process was entirely within legal boundaries left me totally stunned. Truth is, the system needs a complete overhaul. Petitions need to be drawn up, polished and put on the books. That would be the first step. The second step is, forget about patient confidentiality when the patient is deemed by a court to be a danger to others. Way before this event ever took place, a judge did in fact state this in a 2005 document. Why was that ignored? Good question. Like I said, there needs to be broad change for there to be any sort of prevention.
I heard it discussed early on about allowing students permits to carry concealed weapons on campus because, apparently, "security can't be everywhere." Really. I'd like to know what idiot came up with this brilliant idea, beacuse if I did, I'd tell him he's just inviting a throw-back to wild west days where stressed-out, sleep-deprived (and possibly drunk) gunslingers would have shootouts on the pavillion, putting even more innocent people at risk. Thank God they seem to have abandoned that idea for the moment.
And this brings me to the issue of gun control. Yeah, I've heard it all before: This country was founded on the right to keep and bear arms. That it would be unconstitutional to change that even a little bit. Give me a large break, because believe it or not, these are different times. I don't believe for one second that the writers of the Constitution of these United States ever could have imagined what they drafted into law could result in the way these whacked-out individuals are going into public places and picking off innocent people like flies. Plus, the intent was for militia to begin with, not the general public. So who misinterpreted the intent over the years? Quite possibly the NRA. I'm sorry, but the NRA can kiss my big toe. They can scream and rant and wave their stacks of documents and legislation all they want, it still won't change this opinion.

More recalls
With all these recalls, I'm personally going to recommend that for the time being you don't give your pets any commercial food or snacks whatsoever. Instead give them a diet of cooked chicken, rice, potatoes, etc. Basically, healthy table scraps. By that I mean no fast food, burgers or fries. Veterinarians might not recommend table scraps, but at least by giving them what you eat yourself, you'll ensure that they won't be poisoned by some chemical additive toxin.

SAN FRANCISCO, March 31, 2007—As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.
The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning this morning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall.
The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves.
No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall. The affected products comprise less than one-tenth of one percent of Del Monte Pet Products' annual pet food and pet treat production.
Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described below.
Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed below to their pets.
Del Monte Pet Products are 100% guaranteed and all voluntarily recalled products will be refunded.

ALPO® BRAND PRIME CUTS IN GRAVY CANNED DOG FOOD
VOLUNTARY NATIONWIDE RECALL
No Dry Purina Products Involved

On March 30, 2007, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.
Consumers should immediately stop feeding their dogs ALPO Prime Cuts products with the date codes listed below and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.
The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.
Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall – including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply.

VOLUNTARY NATIONWIDE RECALL
No Dry Purina Products Involved

On March 30, 2007, Nestlé Purina PetCare Company announced it is voluntarily recalling all sizes and varieties of its ALPO® Prime Cuts in Gravy wet dog food with specific date codes. The Company is taking this voluntary action after learning that wheat gluten containing melamine, a substance not approved for use in food, was provided to Purina by the same company that also supplied Menu Foods. The contamination occurred in a limited production quantity at only one of Purina's 17 pet food manufacturing facilities.
Consumers should immediately stop feeding their dogs ALPO Prime Cuts products with the date codes listed below and consult with a veterinarian if they have any health concerns with their pet.
The recalled 13.2-ounce and 22-ounce ALPO Prime Cuts cans and 6-, 8-, 12- and 24-can ALPO Prime Cuts Variety Packs have four-digit code dates of 7037 through 7053, followed by the plant code 1159. Those codes follow a "Best Before Feb. 2009" date. This information should be checked on the bottom of the can or the top or side of the multi-pack cartons.
Importantly, no Purina brand dry pet foods are affected by the recall – including ALPO Prime Cuts dry. In addition, no other Purina dog food products, no Purina cat food products, Purina treat products or Purina Veterinary Diet products are included in this recall, nor have been impacted by the contaminated wheat gluten supply.

Little Kenadie
Photo © garyparker.com 2006Some of my subscribers may remember the bulletin I posted a few months ago about a documentary airing on The Discovery Channel.
The show featured then 3-year-old Kenadie, the world's smallest little girl, having been diagnosed with primordial dwarfism. With this condition, unlike the more common traits of those with dwarfism, all physical features are proportionate, just extremely small.
I was completely taken with Kenadie, just from watching this documentary, as was many others. What can I say? She's just an adorable little girl.
The reason I'm bringing this up now is there is another update on Kenadie airing on ABC Primetime Special tomorrow at 10 pm eastern time, I believe. If any of you get a chance to see this please do, you won't regret it. You might also go to her website set up by her parents.

Well this is bizarre...
In the news today:
Anti-drug campaigners today attacked the makers of a soft drink who have called their product cocaine.
The high-energy drink is being billed as a "legal alternative" to the class A drug, using a massive hit of caffeine instead of cocaine.
Its maker claims the title is "a bit of fun" but critics slammed the technique as a cynical ploy which could tempt young people into using drugs.
The drink's inventor, Jamie Kirby, said: "It's an energy drink, and it's a fun name. As soon as people look at the can, they smile."
He claims Cocaine is "350 percent stronger than Red Bull" but that people do not experience the "sugar crash" or jitters that he says some of the other energy drinks can produce.
But David Raynes, of the UK National Drug Prevention Alliance, said: "It is people exploiting drugs. It is a pretty cynical tactic exploiting illegal drugs for their own benefit."
Las Vegas-based drinks company Redux Beverages is producing the drink which contains 280 milligrams of caffeine. According to the company's website, the only way to get more caffeine per ounce is with an espresso.
Mr Raynes added: "The fact is that subliminally, it is making the image of drug use cool and that's what kids what to be, cool.
"Kids will be drinking Cocaine and will inevitably link the two. The drink is relatively innocuous, but they will be linking it with cocaine use and the market, which is far from innocuous."
Dr Charles O'Brien, a professor and vice chairman of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, said: "It's just a bad idea and has all the same downsides of too much caffeine plus a very bad name."
The company has received inquiries about selling Cocaine in Britain and throughout Europe. At the moment it is being sold only in the Los Angeles and New York metropolitan areas - mainly to teenagers.

Meow! er... yip, yip!
Meet Johnette, the newest addition to the household. A Maltese/Poodle mix, she's made herself and home and endeared her cuteness to the rest of us. Us humans, that is. The other three cats (by the way, we believe she considers herself one of them) didn't quite know what to make of her when she first came into the room. But they seem to have tolerated her presence a little better, the more time they spend getting used to each other.

More about homelessness
Finally, I was able to get this video to load properly.
This is a woman who shares her sobering story of being homeless and the events that led up to it. If nothing else, this serves as proof that shelters and programs like Bridge of Hope are desparately needed. Luckily this person is no longer homeless or stuck in a terrible situation because she found help with a similar shelter program.

Seriously, for some reason when I uploaded his poem it processed right away, but as of right now my own reading is still being "processed" by YouTube... It's happened before, it may just take some time. But in any case, enjoy Bob's poem :)

Video addiction!
Oh my, my... Enjoying another day off. I mean Really enjoying. My "weekends" begin on Saturday night, actually... So while most of you are heading to work and dealing with a sad case of the "Mondays" I'm sleeping in a bit and catching up on the internet.
Today I'm anxiously awaiting arrival of a new video editing program. Adobe Premiere Elements, ordered from Amazon and estimated to get here sometime early this afternoon (I hope.) Last I heard it was at the nearest UPS station not 15 min. away, but I've had to wait since they don't deliver at all on the weekends, *sigh*
I'm really kind of exited about this, just to see how much easier its gonna be to put things together. It's supposed to have a better timeline than QuickTime Pro, and a lot of other features QuickTime doesn't have... I'm hoping it works. If it does, I'm gonna have a lot of fun with it... lol, not that I didn't have fun before... We'll see how it goes.

Beautiful day here in Jersey! The neighbor's out walking his Westies, its nice with the temperature not too hot and muggy the way it was last week, the balcony garden has gotten its share of compliments (now if we could just get whoever's dumping those gigantic buckets of water over the balcony above ours to just Cut It Out...) I picked up a hummingbird feeder before I left work yesterday. There was at least one around the neighborhood two days ago and I wanted to get the feederÿs soon as possible so he'd come back, but so far there's just been the bees and wasps that I've seen today. There's still plenty of summer left so maybe the hummer will make a few more appearance before too long.
Reading? I highly recommend Cesar's Way by Cesar Millan (The Dog Whisperer)You might have seen his show Wednesday nights on the National Geographic Channel. Really an enjoyable read and I learned a lot from it even though there might be a some repetition in some of what he's saying. In a way I think that might be intentional though, because it's not just the individual dogs he's working with, he's also getting their owners to approach an issue from a different angle. Everyone who's an animal lover should read this book... it doesn't matter if you're not a "dog person" per se, you can still be able to get something good from it.
One last thing before I go. I was playing around with some ideas the other night and this is what resulted. You could also say... hmm... Pablo the cat has ADD, annoyance ensues. Well, you be the judge:

China's brutality (Graphic content)
I am frustrated, outraged, sometimes at a loss for words, pissed off to the extreme... want to lash out brutally myself at those responsible. I want to make the monsters pay. I can imagine some satisfying justice in this world, become some kind of neo-vigilante, join the equivalent of the Guardian Angels... no, they're too passive for the state of my mood right now. Something more like this: an animal abuse version of the Boondock Saints. I want to make the monsters pay. Slowly. They are poison in society with their own sick agenda and mindset. Hate is not a strong enough word for my feelings about these people.
Grrr... the best that I can hope for is swift judgement and punishment through the proper channels. That's why I'm calling for tougher legislation regarding animal abuse. Make it a felony across the board, not just in a few states. I am sick to death of so many of these cases never going the full course or ending in aquittals.
I'd like to see it become law that shelters and pet shops comply with checking names on a database of convicted animal abusers before adopting out or selling a pet. I'd like to see jurors in such cases dole out more of a sentence than a slap on the wrist. I'd like the public mindset to go beyond the assumption that "boys will be boys" or "its not like it was a person" or "a pet is merely property." It's been proven nearly since day one that too often torturing and abusing an animal is a precurser to child abuse or domestic violence, in fact they very often occur simultaneously. There are tons of cases that illustrate this very point on the books right now. Just check out http://petabuse.com/

Say you have always had a dog or cat in your household. You've always cared for that animal, made sure it had plenty of food, water, adequate medical care. A stranger suddenly approaches and tells you he's been ordered by the government to exterminate all the dogs within a three-mile radius. Why? To ensure containment of rabies. He wrestles the leash away from you, other officials approach with canes or sticks and begin beating your dog to death... How would you react? This is what's going on in China right now.
Ok, so we live in America, not China... but put yourself for an instant in the other guy's shoes. If someone was killing your pet, would you stand by and let it happen? Not me. Not even if it was government sanctioned.

It's friggin' hot out there people!
Ok, it seems I'm a little late in reminding people to be careful of the high temperatures when it comes to their pets, because in the last few days there's been neglect and just plain avoidable stupidity. In York, PA a puppy strangled on its leash trying to get out through the window of a locked car. And in Chicago, a man left his German Shepherd tied up the entire day in the blazing heat with no food or water, resulting in the animal's death.
Is anybody listening?

Keeping Cool - Keeping Cool Dogs Out of Hot Cars
In the warmer months, hundreds of reports come in from across the country where pet owners have left their dog in a hot car. Since many of these incidents occur in situations where the dog is otherwise well cared for, we must assume that it is ignorance on that part of the pet owner that causes these tragic situations.
Keep Your Pets Safe
Never leave a dog in a parked car. On a mild 73ºF day, the temperature inside a car can reach 120ºF in 30 minutes. On a 90ºF day, the interior of a vehicle can reach 160ºF in minutes.
If you have errands to run, leave the dog at home. Tha majority of cases we see involve pet owners who were "just running into the store for a minute". Minutes turn into a half-hour, and suddenly the dog is in a life-threatening situation.
If you see a dog in a car and in distress, take down the cars color, model, make, and license-plate number, have the owner paged inside nearby stores, and call local humane authorities or police. Have someone keep an eye on the dog. If police are unresponsive or too slow and the dogs life appears to be in imminent danger, find a witness (or several) who will back your assessment, take steps to remove the suffering animal, and then wait for authorities to arrive. Contact PETA for a supply of fliers on the dangers of heatstroke to leave on windshields.
Dont carry your dog in the bed of a pickup truck. This is always dangerous, but the heat brings the added danger of burning the dogs feet on the hot metal.
Dont take your dog joggingexcept on cool mornings or eveningsand dont force exercise. On long walks, rest often and take plenty of water. Hot pavement can burn dogs paws; choose shady, grassy routes.
Trim heavy-coated dogs fur, but leave an inch for protection against insects and sunburn. Keep an eye on areas where hair is thin, like eyelids, ears, and nose as they can get sunburned.
Keep your dog indoors. If he or she must stay outside for long, avoid the hottest part of the day. Provide shade, water, and a kiddie pool. Keep drinking water in an anchored bucket or a heavy bowl that wont tip over.
Be a watchdog for chained dogs. Make sure that they have food, water, and shelter. If you see a dog in distress, contact humane authorities. Give the dog immediate relief by providing water. Click here for more information.
If You See an Animal Suffering From Heatstroke
Heatstroke can come on quickly and result in brain damage or death. Watch for symptoms such as restlessness, excessive thirst, heavy panting, lethargy, lack of appetite, dark tongue, rapid heartbeat, fever, vomiting, or lack of coordination. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, get her or him into the shade immediately and call your veterinarian. Lower the animals body temperature gradually by providing water to drink, applying a cold towel or ice pack to the head, neck, and chest, or immersing the dog in lukewarm (not cold) water.

If police are unresponsive or too slow and the dogs life appears to be in imminent danger, find a witness (or several) who will back your assessment, take steps to remove the suffering animal, and then wait for authorities to arrive. Contact PETA for a supply of fliers on the dangers of heatstroke to leave on windshields.
Dont carry your dog in the bed of a pickup truck. This is always dangerous, but the heat brings the added danger of burning the dogs feet on the hot metal.
Dont take your dog joggingexcept on cool mornings or eveningsand dont force exercise. On long walks, rest often and take plenty of water. Hot pavement can burn dogs paws; choose shady, grassy routes.
Trim heavy-coated dogs fur, but leave an inch for protection against insects and sunburn. Keep an eye on areas where hair is thin, like eyelids, ears, and nose as they can get sunburned.
Keep your dog indoors. If he or she must stay outside for long, avoid the hottest part of the day. Provide shade, water, and a kiddie pool. Keep drinking water in an anchored bucket or a heavy bowl that wont tip over.
Be a watchdog for chained dogs. Make sure that they have food, water, and shelter. If you see a dog in distress, contact humane authorities. Give the dog immediate relief by providing water. Click here for more information.
If You See an Animal Suffering From Heatstroke
Heatstroke can come on quickly and result in brain damage or death. Watch for symptoms such as restlessness, excessive thirst, heavy panting, lethargy, lack of appetite, dark tongue, rapid heartbeat, fever, vomiting, or lack of coordination. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, get her or him into the shade immediately and call your veterinarian. Lower the animals body temperature gradually by providing water to drink, applying a cold towel or ice pack to the head, neck, and chest, or immersing the dog in lukewarm (not cold) water.
